Press Release - Posselt-Baker Show
October 12th will be an important night in the New Orleans art community. It marks the joint openings of exhibitions by two very important figures in Contemporary and Folk Art in America, Noel Rockmore and Rev. Howard Finster. Rockmore will be showing at Posselt-Baker Gallery, 822 St. Peter Street, from October 12 through November 9 and Finster will be showing at Gaspari Folk Art Gallery , 831 St. Peter - 3rd Floor, from October 12 through November 2.
The Rockmore exhibit, his first in almost 2 years, will consist of important recent paintings, pastels and sculpture.
Rockmore, a native of New York City who was born in 1928, has lived and worked in New Orleans since 1959. He is represented in over 600 collections, such as the Hirschorn Museum and many other museums throughout the country. Other private and public collections include Vincent Price, Jimmy Buffet, Raphael Soyer, Huntington Hartford, George Wein, Sergio Franchi, John Koch, Victor Potamkin, Shirley Marvin, Rep. Lindy Boggs, Roger Grimsby, the General Mills Corp., Kleen-Tex, Inc., Time Magazine and the estates of Larry Borenstein and Gordon Russell.
He has exhibited at New York’s most important museums, the Metropolitan, the Whitney and the Modern, and has had innumerable one-man exhibitions in New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis, Jackson, Miss., Ohio, New Jersey and Indiana. He has also had three retrospectives and two book publications.
Rockmore has been awarded 2 Hallgarten Awards, 2 Tiffany Fellowships, the Wallace Truman Prize, the Tupperware Fellowship, the American Federation of Art Grant through the Ford Foundation and the Butler Institute of American Art Award.
